Remember Your Father Who Provides
8 1 Be careful to do every commandment I am commanding you today, so that you may live and multiply and go in and possess the land that our Father swore to your ancestors. 2 Remember the whole way your Father led you through the wilderness for those forty years, to humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart — whether you would keep his commandments or not. 3 He humbled you and let you go hungry, then fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor had your ancestors ever known, to make you understand that man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of our Father. 4 Your clothing did not wear out on you, and your feet did not swell for those forty years. 5 Know then in your heart that, as a man disciplines his son, so your Father disciplines you. 6 So keep the commandments of your Father, walking in his ways and fearing him. 7 For your Father is bringing you into a good land — a land of flowing streams, of springs and deep waters welling up in valleys and hills, 8 a land of wheat and barley, of grapevines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey, 9 a land where you will eat bread without scarcity and lack nothing, a land whose stones are iron and from whose hills you can dig copper. 10 And when you have eaten and are full, you shall bless your Father for the good land he has given you.
Do Not Forget Your Father
11 Take care that you do not forget your Father by failing to keep his commandments, his rules, and his statutes that I am commanding you today, 12 for when you have eaten and are full, and have built fine houses and live in them, 13 and when your herds and flocks multiply, and your silver and gold multiply, and all that you have multiplies, 14 then your heart may grow proud, and you forget your Father, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, 15 who led you through the great and terrible wilderness, with its poisonous snakes and scorpions and its thirsty, waterless ground, who brought you water from the hard rock, 16 who fed you in the wilderness with manna that your ancestors had never known, to humble you and test you, and in the end to do you good — 17 Beware lest you say in your heart, "My own power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth." 18 Remember your Father, for it is he who gives you the power to gain wealth, to confirm his covenant that he swore to your ancestors, as it is to this day.
19 But if you ever forget your Father and go after other gods and serve them and bow down to them, I solemnly warn you today that you will surely perish. 20 Like the nations that our Father is destroying before you, so you will perish, because you would not obey the voice of your Father.
