Our Father's Covenant at Horeb

Chapter 5.

Moses summoned all Israel and said to them: "Listen, Israel, to the statutes and judgments I am speaking to you today. Learn them, and be careful to do them." our Father made a covenant with us at Horeb. It was not with our ancestors that our Father made this covenant, but with us — all of us who are alive here today. Our Father spoke with you face to face at the mountain, from within the fire.

Our Father Speaks the Ten Commandments

At that time I was standing between our Father and you to tell you our Father's word, for you were afraid because of the fire and did not go up the mountain. And he said:

"I am your Father, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

"You must have no other gods before me.

"You must not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in the heavens above, or on the earth beneath, or in the waters below the earth. You must not bow down to them or serve them, for I, your Father, am a jealous Father, holding the children to account for the iniquity of the fathers, to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

"You must not misuse the name of your Father, for our Father will not leave unpunished anyone who misuses his name.

"Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as your Father commanded you. Six days you are to labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to your Father. On it you must not do any work — you, your son or daughter, your male or female servant, your ox or donkey or any of your livestock, or the foreigner living in your towns — so that your male and female servants may rest as well as you. Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and that your Father brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. That is why our Father commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.

"Honor your father and your mother, as your Father commanded you, so that your days may be long and that it may go well with you in the land that your Father is giving you.

"You must not murder.

"You must not commit adultery.

"You must not steal.

"You must not give false testimony against your neighbor.

"You must not covet your neighbor's wife. You must not desire your neighbor's house, his field, his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."

Israel Trembles; Our Father Draws Near

These words our Father spoke to your whole assembly at the mountain, from within the fire, the cloud, and the deep darkness, with a loud voice; and he said nothing more. Then he wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me.

Now when you heard the voice from within the darkness, while the mountain was blazing with fire, you came near to me — all the heads of your tribes and your elders — and you said, "Look, our Father has shown us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice from within the fire. Today we have seen that our Father speaks with a person, and that person still lives. But now, why should we die? For this great fire will consume us. If we keep hearing the voice of our Father any longer, we will die. For who among all living people has ever heard the voice of our living Father speaking from within the fire, as we have, and lived? Go and listen to everything our Father says, and then tell us everything our Father tells you, and we will listen and obey."

Our Father heard your words when you spoke to me, and our Father said to me: "I have heard the words this people has spoken to you. They are right in all they have said. If only their hearts were always set like this — to fear me and keep all my commandments — so that it might go well with them and with their children forever!

Go and tell them, 'Return to your tents.' But you, stand here with me, and I will give you the whole commandment — the statutes and the judgments — that you are to teach them, so they may do them in the land I am giving them to possess."

So be careful to do as your Father has commanded you. Do not turn aside to the right or to the left. Follow the path your Father has commanded you, so that you may live and prosper and live long in the land you will possess.
