Divorce and Remarriage

Chapter 24.

When a man marries a woman, if she no longer pleases him because he has found something indecent about her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, puts it in her hand, and sends her out of his house, 1 1 v1 Moses permitted divorce because of the hardness of the human heart; Jesus pointed back to our Father's original design of lifelong union (Matthew 19:8). and if she leaves his house and goes and becomes another man's wife, and the second husband turns against her and writes her a certificate of divorce, puts it in her hand, and sends her out of his house — or if the second husband who took her as his wife dies — then her first husband who sent her away may not take her again to be his wife after she has been defiled; for that is detestable before our Father, and you must not bring sin upon the land your Father is giving you as an inheritance.

The Newlywed's Year

When a man has recently married, he must not go out with the army or be assigned any duty. He is to be free at home for one year to bring joy to his wife.

Laws That Guard the Vulnerable

No one shall take a pair of millstones, or even the upper millstone, as security for a debt, for that is taking someone's very livelihood as security.

If a man is caught kidnapping a fellow Israelite, treating him as a slave or selling him, that kidnapper must die. In this way, you must purge the evil from among you.

In a case of a defiling skin disease, be very careful to do exactly as the Levitical priests instruct you and to do as I have commanded them. Remember what your Father did to Miriam on the way as you came out of Egypt.

When you make your neighbor a loan of any kind, you must not go into his house to collect his pledge. You must stand outside, and the borrower must bring the pledge out to you. And if he is a poor man, you must not keep his pledge overnight. Return his pledge to him as the sun goes down, so that he may sleep in his cloak and bless you; and your Father will count it as righteousness for you.

You must not take advantage of a hired worker who is poor and needy, whether he is one of your brothers or a foreigner residing in one of the towns of your land. Pay him his wages each day before the sun sets, since he is poor and is counting on it. Otherwise he may cry out to our Father against you, and you will be guilty of sin.

Parents must not be put to death for their children, nor children put to death for their parents; each person is to be put to death for his own sin.

You must not deny justice to the foreigner or the fatherless, and you must not take a widow's cloak as security for a debt. Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and your Father redeemed you from there; that is why I command you to do this.

When you are harvesting in your field and you overlook a bundle of grain, do not go back to get it. Leave it for the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow, so that your Father may bless you in all the work of your hands. When you beat the olives from your trees, do not go over the branches a second time. What is left is for the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow.

When you harvest the grapes in your vineyard, do not go over it again. What is left is for the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow. Remember that you were slaves in the land of Egypt; that is why I command you to do this.
