Israel Returns: The Families of Jerusalem
9 1 So all Israel was recorded in genealogies, and they are written in the Book of the Kings of Israel. And Judah was carried away into exile to Babylon because of their unfaithfulness. 2 Now the first to resettle on their own property in their cities were Israel, the priests, the Levites, and the temple servants. 3 And in Jerusalem lived some of the people of Judah, of Benjamin, and of Ephraim and Manasseh:
4 Uthai the son of Ammihud, the son of Omri, the son of Imri, the son of Bani, from the sons of Perez the son of Judah.
5 And of the Shilonites: Asaiah the firstborn, and his sons.
6 And of the sons of Zerah: Jeuel and their kinsmen, 690.
7 And of the sons of Benjamin: Sallu the son of Meshullam, the son of Hodaviah, the son of Hassenuah, 8 Ibneiah the son of Jeroham, Elah the son of Uzzi, the son of Michri, and Meshullam the son of Shephatiah, the son of Reuel, the son of Ibnijah;
9 and their relatives, listed by family line, 956. All these were heads of their ancestral families.
10 And of the priests: Jedaiah, Jehoiarib, Jachin, 11 and Azariah the son of Hilkiah, the son of Meshullam, the son of Zadok, the son of Meraioth, the son of Ahitub, the chief officer of the house of our Father;
12 and Adaiah the son of Jeroham, the son of Pashhur, the son of Malchijah, and Maasai the son of Adiel, the son of Jahzerah, the son of Meshullam, the son of Meshillemith, the son of Immer;
13 and their relatives — heads of their families — 1,760 in all, capable men for serving in the house of our Father.
14 And of the Levites: Shemaiah the son of Hasshub, the son of Azrikam, the son of Hashabiah, of the sons of Merari;
15 and Bakbakkar, Heresh, Galal, and Mattaniah the son of Mica, the son of Zichri, the son of Asaph; 16 and Obadiah the son of Shemaiah, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun, and Berechiah the son of Asa, the son of Elkanah, who lived in the villages of the Netophathites.
17 And the gatekeepers: Shallum, Akkub, Talmon, Ahiman, and their kinsmen; Shallum was the chief. 18 And to this day they are stationed at the King's Gate on the east side. These were the gatekeepers of the camps of the Levites. 19 And Shallum the son of Kore, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of Korah, and his relatives, the Korahites, were responsible for guarding the entrances to the tent; their fathers had been in charge of the camp of our Father, guarding the entrance. 20 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar was the ruler over them in earlier times; our Father was with him. 21 Zechariah the son of Meshelemiah was gatekeeper at the entrance of the tent of meeting.
22 All those chosen as gatekeepers at the gates numbered 212. They were listed in genealogical records by village. David and Samuel the seer had appointed them to these trusted positions. 23 So they and their sons were in charge of the gates of the house of our Father, the house of the tent, as guards. 24 The gatekeepers were posted on the four sides: east, west, north, and south. 25 And their kinsmen in their villages were to come in every seven days, from time to time, to be with them, 26 for the four chief gatekeepers, who were Levites, were entrusted with the chambers and the treasuries of the house of our Father. 27 They spent the night around the house of our Father, since it was their duty to guard it and to open it every morning.
28 Some of them were in charge of the worship utensils, counting them as they were brought in and out. 29 Others were responsible for the furnishings, the holy utensils, the fine flour, the wine, the oil, the incense, and the spices. 30 And some of the priests' sons blended the spices. 31 And Mattithiah, one of the Levites, the firstborn of Shallum the Korahite, was entrusted with making the flat cakes. 32 And some of their Kohathite relatives were in charge of preparing the bread of the rows every Sabbath. 1 1 v32 Bread of the rows: twelve sacred loaves arranged in two rows on the sanctuary table and replaced each Sabbath.
33 Now these were the singers, heads of Levite families, living in the temple chambers and free from other duties, for they were on duty day and night. 34 These were heads of Levite families, leaders listed by family line; and they lived in Jerusalem.
Saul's Lineage: Tracing Back to Gibeon
35 In Gibeon lived Jeiel the father of Gibeon, and the name of his wife was Maacah, 36 and his firstborn son was Abdon, then Zur, Kish, Baal, Ner, Nadab, 37 Gedor, Ahio, Zechariah, and Mikloth. 38 And Mikloth fathered Shimeam. These too lived alongside their kinsmen in Jerusalem, opposite their kinsmen.
39 And Ner fathered Kish, Kish fathered Saul, and Saul fathered Jonathan, Malchi-shua, Abinadab, and Esh-baal. 40 And the son of Jonathan was Merib-baal, and Merib-baal fathered Micah. 41 The sons of Micah: Pithon, Melech, Tahrea, and Ahaz. 42 And Ahaz fathered Jarah, and Jarah fathered Alemeth, Azmaveth, and Zimri; and Zimri fathered Moza. 43 And Moza fathered Binea, and Rephaiah was his son, Eleasah his son, and Azel his son.
44 And Azel had six sons, and these are their names: Azrikam, Bocheru, Ishmael, Sheariah, Obadiah, and Hanan. These were the sons of Azel.
