The Mighty Sons of Issachar

Chapter 7.

The sons of Issachar were Tola, Puah, Jashub, and Shimron — four in all. The sons of Tola were Uzzi, Rephaiah, Jeriel, Jahmai, Ibsam, and Shemuel — heads of their ancestral families. In the line of Tola they were mighty warriors for generations; their number in the days of David was 22,600. The son of Uzzi was Izrahiah. The sons of Izrahiah were Michael, Obadiah, Joel, and Isshiah — all five of them chiefs. Along with them, according to their generations and ancestral families, were 36,000 troops ready for battle, for they had many wives and children. Their relatives among all the clans of Issachar were mighty warriors, 87,000 in all, recorded in their genealogy.

The Warrior Clans of Benjamin

Three sons of Benjamin: Bela, Becher, and Jediael. The sons of Bela were Ezbon, Uzzi, Uzziel, Jerimoth, and Iri — five heads of ancestral families, mighty warriors. Their genealogical record listed 22,034. The sons of Becher were Zemirah, Joash, Eliezer, Elioenai, Omri, Jeremoth, Abijah, Anathoth, and Alemeth — all of them sons of Becher. Their genealogical record, by their generations, listed the heads of their ancestral families and 20,200 mighty warriors. The son of Jediael was Bilhan. The sons of Bilhan were Jeush, Benjamin, Ehud, Chenaanah, Zethan, Tarshish, and Ahishahar. All these were sons of Jediael, heads of their ancestral families, mighty warriors — 17,200 ready to march out for battle. Shuppim and Huppim were the descendants of Ir, and the Hushites the descendants of Aher.

Naphtali: Sons Born to Bilhah

The sons of Naphtali were Jahziel, Guni, Jezer, and Shallum — the descendants of Bilhah.

Manasseh's Descendants and Their Families

The descendants of Manasseh: Asriel was born to his Aramean concubine, who also bore Machir the father of Gilead. Machir took a wife from among the Huppites and Shuppim. His sister's name was Maacah. Another descendant was named Zelophehad, who had only daughters. Maacah the wife of Machir gave birth to a son and named him Peresh. His brother was named Sheresh, and his sons were Ulam and Rakem. The son of Ulam: Bedan. These were the sons of Gilead son of Machir, son of Manasseh. His sister Hammolecheth gave birth to Ishhod, Abiezer, and Mahlah. The sons of Shemida were Ahian, Shechem, Likhi, and Aniam.

Ephraim's Grief and Joshua's Line

The descendants of Ephraim: Shuthelah, whose son was Bered, whose son was Tahath, whose son was Eleadah, whose son was Tahath, whose son was Zabad, whose son was Shuthelah. Ezer and Elead were killed by the men of Gath — men native to that land — when they went down to raid their livestock. Their father Ephraim mourned for many days, and his relatives came to comfort him. Then he made love to his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to a son. He named him Beriah, because tragedy had come upon his household. His daughter was Sheerah, who built Lower and Upper Beth-horon as well as Uzzen-sheerah. Rephah was his son, Resheph his son, Telah his son, Tahan his son, Ladan his son, Ammihud his son, Elishama his son, Nun his son, and Joshua his son. Their possessions and settlements were Bethel and its surrounding villages, Naaran to the east, Gezer and its villages to the west, and Shechem and its villages as far as Ayyah and its villages. Along the borders of Manasseh were Beth-shean, Taanach, Megiddo, and Dor, each with its surrounding villages. In these towns lived the descendants of Joseph son of Israel.

Asher's Sons: Warriors and Chiefs

The sons of Asher were Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, and Beriah; their sister was Serah. The sons of Beriah were Heber and Malchiel, who was the father of Birzaith. Heber was the father of Japhlet, Shomer, and Hotham, and of their sister Shua. The sons of Japhlet were Pasach, Bimhal, and Ashvath. These were the sons of Japhlet. The sons of Shemer were Ahi, Rohgah, Hubbah, and Aram. The sons of his brother Helem were Zophah, Imna, Shelesh, and Amal. The sons of Zophah were Suah, Harnepher, Shual, Beri, Imrah, Bezer, Hod, Shamma, Shilshah, Ithran, and Beera. The sons of Jether were Jephunneh, Pispa, and Ara. The sons of Ulla were Arah, Hanniel, and Rizia. All these were descendants of Asher — heads of ancestral families, outstanding men, mighty warriors, and prominent leaders. The number recorded in their genealogy for military service was 26,000 men.
